We invite all participants of the School to combine intense scientific discussions with active recreation. The school is located in the beautiful area of Terskol, at the foot of Mount Elbrus, where there are plenty of opportunities for sports and hiking in the fresh mountain air.
Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding
At the beginning of April, there may still be some snow cover in the area around Terskol. If the weather conditions are good and the ski lifts are open, you can enjoy skiing or snowboarding there.
- Cheget Mountain. The slopes of Cheget Mountain, which are closest to the hotel, have a more "wild" character as they are not always groomed by snow grooming machines. The cost of a ski pass is around 1 800 RUB per day.
- Elbrus Mountain. The slopes at Elbrus are usually maintained by snow grooming machines, which makes them more comfortable and safer for skiers. There are two cable cars on Elbrus, the old one and the new one. For up-to-date information about prices, please visit the following websites: the New cable car / the Old cable car
If you are bringing your own skiing and snowboarding equipment, the hotel offers a convenient storage and drying room.
Hiking & Trekking
The surrounding area of Terskol is ideal for hiking and short treks. Here are a few popular routes:
- Maiden Spits Waterfall (7–8 km) . The route along the Terskol gorge to a beautiful frozen waterfall. The route of average difficulty
- Narzan Springs (6–8 km) . A gentle path leads from the village of Terskol or the Cheget glade to the Narzan glade, where you can enjoy the taste of mineral water directly from the spring
- From the Azau glade to the Cheget glade (5–6 km) . An easy walk with scenic views of the mountainous slopes and Elbrus
- To the Observatory (8–10 km). This route has a significant elevation gain and is recommended for participants who are in good physical shape
We strongly recommend checking the condition of the trails and weather before setting out on any route. If you are not experienced in independent mountain hiking, do not go without a professional guide for your safety. Also, be aware of avalanche conditions and take appropriate precautions.
Morning Exercises & Health-Promoting Activities
We are considering organizing morning exercises outdoors (depending on the weather and the number of participants). Please keep an eye out for announcements from the organizers. If there is sufficient interest, morning exercise could be a great way to start the day and adapt to the mountain environment!
Team Games & Leisure Activities at the Hotel
There are usually facilities for evening entertainment and indoor sports at or near the hotel. Check locally for availability:
- Table tennis
- Billiards
- Chess
If the participants have any interest, we would be more than happy to organize a chess tournament or some friendly board game sessions!
SAFETY RULES & IMPORTANT INFO
- Always check the avalanche reports and carefully monitor the weather forecast for your safety. Up-to-date information is published on the Telegram channel. We highly recommend subscribing to this channel in advance
- Dress in layers: the weather can change dramatically in the mountains
- In case of winter hikes and challenging routes, it is advisable to bring trekking poles and, if needed, crampons for safely navigating icy terrain
- If you are new to mountain hiking or trekking, it is recommended that you consult with the organizers or a local guide for advice
We hope that the combination of scientific lectures, physical exercises, and the beauty of the mountain landscapes will make your experience at the School not only productive, but also unforgettable. We wish you excellent health and new successes, both in science and sports!
